The Eagle Ski Club - celebrating 100 years in 2025

We are the UK's largest and most active ski touring and ski mountaineering club, with over 1,500 members. We all share a common interest and passion for ski touring and ski mountaineering in the UK, the Alps and further afield. We are also celebrating our 100th anniversary in 2025 (the photos above were all taken at our special centenary meet in Arolla in March, which was attended by over 170 members and guests) - you can find out more on our Centenary 2025 page.

We organise over 60 ski touring trips abroad and over 15 meets in Scotland each year; from day tours and hut-to-hut tours to major expeditions. We have a strong focus on developing skills for ski touring and on supporting those interested in leading tours. We're also encouraging members to use low carbon travel options as much as possible to reach their ski touring destinations. We hope you enjoy exploring our website, and finding out about our Club.

Centenary dinner in London

A centenary dinner will be held in London at the Army & Navy Club on Pall Mall on Saturday 1 Nov 2025. Drinks will be served from 18:30 and dinner will start at 19:30.The cost is £100 including four glasses of wine. There’s a choice of veggie and non-veggie menus plus an option for those with special dietary requests. Space is limited to 100 diners so book now to be sure of your place.

Ski touring symposium - 15-16 November 2025

As part of our centenary year, the club will be holding a two-day ski mountaineering symposium at the Duke of Gordon Hotel at Kingussie (near Aviemore) over the weekend of 15th and 16th November 2025. It’s a chance to participate in an informative and inspirational weekend to guide your future ski touring as well as an opportunity to celebrate the club’s heritage and centenary.  More details can be found on the symposium event page of the website.

Making things happen: volunteering opportunities

Our Club is run for members by members. We employ no staff, so we rely entirely on members who step forward to help run the Club. Low-Cost Intro Course for new Ski Tourers

Ski touring can be a wonderfully affordable way to ski once you are skilled enough to do so as an equal member of a group. But the Club is aware that the costs of learning to ski tour can be prohibitive, with expensive kit hire and guiding fees. 

That's why we are expanding our training offer for novices, reducing costs to help more people develop the skills needed to participate in the Club's extensive touring programme.

Partnering with the UCPA, the Club is offering an exclusive course for members who are advanced piste skiers, have some off piste experience, and have no ski touring experience. The course runs from 14 to 20 March 2026 at Les Contamines, easily accessible by train from Geneva.

The course cost is £1045, inclusive of accommodation, instruction, all meals, equipment hire, and ski pass. For those who need it, the Club is also offering a subsidy of between £100 and £300, making the cost as low as £645 for 6.5 days of all-inclusive full-board skiing in the Alps. 

There are eight places available. Apply using this form by 1 November. 

We will let you know if your application has been successful and if you have been awarded a subsidy by 1 December. You will have until 1 December to join the Club (£30 for under-30s) and to pay a £100 deposit, or your place will be given to someone else. The full balance (£645-£945) will be due by 11 February.

The Eagle Ski Club is the UK's largest ski mountaineering Club. People with an existing interest in mountaineering - in the UK and overseas - and a strong foundational skiing ability on and off piste would be especially strong applicants. 

Use your application form to tell us about your mountaineering experience and ski touring aspirations. If you already have ski touring skills you may find that other opportunities on our touring programme are better suited to you, such as our Club meets. Joining information is here.

Ski touring on a budget

The costs of ski touring can be a barrier for people getting into the sport. The club wants to widen participation and devise ways to help members, particularly new members, to ski tour on a budget. As a way of kicking this off, club member Tom Lichfield has written a really useful guide, “Ski Touring on a Budget”, full of handy tips for saving money. And, if you want to add your money saving suggestions, we’ve set up a special ‘ski touring on a budget’ forum page to exchange ideas. 

Remembering former Eagles

The club's long history means that sadly many Eagles are no longer with us. The passing of former members is reported on the Member Announcements page (under Resources menu), with information about funerals and memorial events where appropriate. Recent deaths have included Janet O'Neill, Charles Knowles, Steve Thomas, Nigel Estlick (President 2004-6) and Don Henderson (Treasurer 2005-8). 

The joys of train travel to the mountains

With the club programme now online, it’s also time to weigh up travel options. Many Eagle members are choosing to let the train take the strain. Not only is it better for the planet but it’s generally a more chilled and pleasant journey experience. The Jeremy Whitehead Award

This is an occasional award to celebrate outstanding personal contribution to ski-touring within the club. Jeremy Whitehead himself was an outstanding club leader who led at least one tour every year from the 1970s until 2019. The club’s touring committee has presented the 2024 award to Rob Greaves for the key role he has played, alongside others, in the foundation and success of the club’s Leader Development Programme. The club has also awarded honorary membership to Steve Wright, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the club in many roles, over 36 years of membership, especially his work developing and championing a climate care strategy within the club.

Organising activities with other members

Encouraging and supporting more ground-up, member-organised activities is one of our priorities. These activities can range from seeking ski touring companions at short notice to putting forward ideas for informal ski tours and non-skiing activities in the summer.
